Age 20-39 Years

PREVENTION HIGHLIGHTS

Men and women in this age group should  avoid cigarette smoke and excessive alcohol use. You should also regularly examine yourself for any new or unusual skin lesions. Conflict resolution should be carried out in a respectful and rational manner.

Emotional and mental concerns should be recognized and addressed.  These could include abuse issues, relationship problems, depressive symptoms, and suicide risk factors: alcohol or other drug abuse, unemployment, failed partnership, serious illness/injury, living alone, and problems with bereavement. You may need to seek help from relatives, friends, or professionals.

You should also be aware of and address inadequate nutrition, insufficient activity, increased stress, job dissatisfaction, unsafe sex, unsafe driving, and irresponsible recreational activities.

The leading causes of death in this age group are: motor vehicle accidents, homicides, suicides, non-motor vehicle injuries, and heart disease.

For more information on prevention, go to Prevention Activities and Self-Examination in this section. You should also visit Self-Care, Early Warning (Signs of Possible Serious Illness), and Cancer Awareness on the main page.

A Periodic Heath Assessment in this age group can begin with basic screening every 2-3 years in a healthy adult. This could include a minimum of: weight, BMI, waist measurement, pulse, blood pressure, and finger stick testing for sugar/cholesterol.

Based on gender, family history, past/present health and life-style, your doctor/nurse practitioner can perform a physical assessment, screening tests/procedures, immunization, and counselling as required.        Go to Health Assessment for details.

Dental care, including preventive dental visits every 6 months is important.  Go to Dental Visits to record this care.
